Why the correct engine oil matters
Oil reduces friction between moving engine components. Its additives also help manage the deposits and contaminants produced during normal operation. Using the correct oil supports the lubrication system’s intended operation.
Viscosity is only one part of the specification. Engines can require particular manufacturer approvals, and two oils with the same viscosity may not meet the same requirements. The workshop should select oil using the engine’s service information, rather than a general rule for all cars.

How often should engine oil be changed?
There is no single interval that suits every vehicle. Use the manufacturer’s service schedule, the service indicator where applicable and the record of the last completed service.
Some schedules specify a time or distance limit, whichever comes first. Other vehicles use condition-based servicing. Low annual kilometres do not automatically mean the oil can remain in use indefinitely.
Short trips, repeated cold starts, towing and other demanding use can affect the schedule specified for a vehicle. Tell the workshop how you use the car so that any relevant manufacturer guidance can be considered.

A maintenance reminder
A scheduled-service message is a prompt to check what work is due. Do not simply clear it without completing the required maintenance. If you are unsure which reminder is showing, consult the handbook or describe the exact message to the workshop.
Low oil level or a visible leak
Check the level using the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure, whether that uses a dipstick or an electronic display. Repeatedly needing to add oil or finding fresh oil beneath the car deserves investigation.
A leak may be noticed during servicing, but diagnosing and repairing it is separate work. Mention the concern when booking so the workshop can allow for the necessary assessment.
Unusual noise, smell or warning
A burning smell, new engine noise or pressure warning should not be treated as proof that the car simply needs an oil change. These can indicate a problem requiring prompt diagnosis.
Oil colour on its own is not a dependable measure of whether the oil is due for replacement. Darkening can occur during normal use, so follow the schedule and consider the wider evidence.
Can topping up replace an oil service?
No. Topping up restores the level when appropriate, but it does not remove the used oil or replace the filter. Use only suitable oil, follow the manufacturer’s checking method and avoid overfilling.
If the level keeps falling, the reason needs to be established. Oil consumption and leaks can have different causes, and repeated top-ups should not become a substitute for investigating a change.
Why replace the oil filter?
The filter captures particles carried in the oil. It has its own service life and needs to be renewed according to the relevant service procedure.

Will an oil service improve performance?
Correct maintenance supports normal engine operation and helps limit avoidable wear. It does not guarantee a noticeable power increase or fix every performance issue.
Rough idling, a warning light or loss of power may require diagnostic testing. Describe any symptoms before the service so the workshop can distinguish scheduled maintenance from a fault that needs further investigation.
