Your engine oil and oil filter work together. Oil lubricates moving components and carries away heat and contaminants, while the filter captures particles from the circulating oil. Both need attention as part of the vehicle’s maintenance schedule.
Luca Motors provides oil and filter services in Alphington for everyday cars, European vehicles and 4x4s. Choosing the correct oil and filter for the engine is as important as completing the service on time.
Use the service schedule: oil colour alone does not tell you whether a filter needs changing. Follow the manufacturer’s time, distance or condition-based requirements, and have unusual symptoms investigated separately.
What are filter services?
In an oil and filter service, the focus is the engine’s lubrication system. Used oil is removed, the oil filter is renewed in accordance with the service procedure, and the engine is refilled with suitable oil to the correct level.
Vehicles also have other filters, such as engine air, cabin and, where fitted, serviceable fuel filters. Those perform different jobs and have their own inspection or replacement requirements. Do not assume that every filter is included in an oil and filter booking; confirm the service scope.
Why does the oil filter matter?
As oil circulates, it can carry particles produced by normal engine operation. The filter helps prevent those particles from continuing around the lubrication system. Its design must suit the engine, including the required fitment and operating characteristics.
A filter has a limited service life. Leaving it in use beyond the appropriate schedule can compromise filtration. Replacing oil without giving the filter the attention specified by the manufacturer leaves part of the maintenance task incomplete.
Likewise, a new filter does not restore old oil’s depleted properties. The two items should be managed together according to the correct service procedure.
When is an oil and filter service due?
Start with the manufacturer’s schedule and your service history. Some vehicles use fixed time and distance limits; others have a condition-based service indicator. Follow the requirements for your model and engine rather than a generic mileage recommendation.
Short journeys, frequent cold starts, towing and other operating conditions may affect the applicable schedule. Ask the workshop to check whether the manufacturer’s guidance for more demanding use applies to your driving.
If the history is incomplete, provide any records you have so the next service can be planned on an informed basis.
Symptoms that need more than a routine booking
A service reminder tells you that scheduled maintenance is due. An oil-pressure warning is different and can indicate an urgent lubrication problem. If an oil-pressure warning appears while the engine is running, stop safely, switch off the engine and follow the handbook before restarting.
Arrange an inspection for repeated oil-level drops, visible leaks, a burning smell or unusual engine noise. These symptoms do not automatically mean the filter is at fault, and an oil change alone may not resolve them.
Dark oil is not a reliable diagnosis by itself. Oil can darken during normal use, particularly in some engines, so appearance needs to be considered alongside the schedule, level and other findings.
What happens during the service?
The technician confirms the required oil specification, filter and service procedure for the engine. After the oil and filter work, the level and relevant areas are checked as appropriate. The service reminder may be reset once the scheduled work has been completed.
The booking may also include fluid-level checks or a visual inspection for leaks. Broader checks of brakes, tyres, lights and other systems depend on the service package, so discuss these when arranging the appointment.
Tell the workshop about symptoms before the work begins. Diagnostic investigation or repairing a leak can require additional time beyond routine servicing.
What benefits should you expect?
Correct oil and filter maintenance supports engine lubrication and helps limit avoidable wear. It is part of looking after reliability over the vehicle’s life.
It is not a guaranteed performance upgrade, a cure for every rough-running problem or a promise of lower fuel consumption. If a warning, misfire or loss of power remains, the cause needs investigation.
European vehicles and 4x4s
Different engines can require different oil approvals even when the viscosity printed on the container looks similar. A manufacturer’s required specification, the filter design and the refill procedure all need to match the engine.
For vehicles used for towing or other demanding work, mention that use when booking. The service recommendation should reflect the manufacturer’s requirements and the vehicle’s condition.
Keep a clear service record
Record the date, odometer reading and work completed. This helps establish when the next service is due and gives future diagnosis useful context. Our oil service guide explains the difference between changing oil and simply topping up the level.
